How this list is ordered

Schools are ordered by the median earnings of their Engineering graduates four years after completing, highest first. Only schools with a reported Engineering earnings cohort in the West appear. The figures are medians for federally aided completers who were working and not enrolled. For 2 of the 76 listed schools the figure is the two-year completion median rather than the four-year one. The metric does not adjust for graduate school enrollment, cost, or who enrolls, and it is not a measure of teaching quality. The range and median below cover the 63 schools with a published figure. University of California-Berkeley reports $158,239, and the spread from that top figure to the lowest listed median of $69,434 is $88,805.

Job market context in the West

Engineering graduates in the West enter a labor market that links to occupations such as Civil Engineers, Industrial Engineers, and Mechanical Engineers. The median annual wage across those occupations is $135,074, and a quarter of workers in those occupations earn less than $107,160. Projections for 2024 to 2034 put employment in those occupations about 14.0% higher, with 83,160 projected openings a year, or about 285 openings a year for every hundred graduates, meaning more projected openings than graduates. Wages and top occupations exclude management occupations; openings include them. The ranking above uses graduate earnings four years after completing, not the broader occupational wages described here.
