How this list is ordered
Schools are ordered by the median earnings of their Mathematics graduates four years after completing, highest first. Only schools with a reported Mathematics earnings cohort in the Northeast appear. The figure captures federally aided completers who were working and not enrolled four years after graduating. For 27 of the 119 listed programs the figure is the two-year completion median rather than the four-year one. The metric does not adjust for graduate school enrollment, cost, or who enrolls, and it is not a measure of teaching quality. The range and median below cover the 110 schools with a published figure. The gap between first-ranked Harvard University and second-ranked Massachusetts Institute of Technology is $21,776.
Job market context in the Northeast
Mathematics graduates in the Northeast enter a labor market linked to occupations such as Secondary School Teachers, Except Special and Career/Technical Education, Data Scientists, and Mathematical Science Teachers, Postsecondary. Across those occupations the median annual wage is $103,914, and a quarter of workers in those occupations earn less than $80,687. Projections for 2024 to 2034 put employment in those occupations about 5.0% higher, with 47,720 projected openings a year, or about 571 openings a year for every hundred graduates, suggesting more projected openings than graduates. Wages and top occupations exclude management occupations; openings include them. The ranking above uses graduate earnings four years after completing, not the broader occupational wage figures shown here.
